What's New and Returning Users?

Modified on Wed, 3 May, 2023 at 11:25 AM

When cookie tracking is enabled, we can identify visitors to our website as either new or returning.

A new visitor is someone who is either visiting the site for the first time or who hasn't visited in more than 30 minutes. To determine if someone is a new visitor, we check if they have a first_session cookie. This cookie is set when a user visits the website for the first time, and we compare its value to the value of their current howuku_session cookie.

On the other hand, a returning visitor is someone who has visited the website before and has not cleared their browser cache or had their session timeout. To identify returning visitors, we check if they have a howuku_session cookie that doesn't match the value of their first_session cookie.

However, it's worth noting that if a user clears their browser cache or their session times out (after 30 minutes of inactivity), they will be treated as a new visitor the next time they visit the site.
